CommentsArchie's Celtic flag for charity
By Eoin Mc Garvey
Donegal flag maker Archie Dunlop who's involved with a fund raising campaign for the starving folk in Malawi, South Africa has secured some big names for the tri-colour flag that he's auctioning.
Archie, from Crolly, had secured the signatures of many of Celtic's greats on the hand made tricolour together with signatures of a few Donegal celebrities such as Enya and Daniel O'Donnell.
Archie, who is famed for producing flags and banners on his trusty sewing machine, has taken aboard the plight of the starving people in the African parish of Donegal born Fr. Owen O'Donnell. He started an appeal to raise much-needed funds for the starving people where the Donegal priest is based. He has already received a bid of 1,000 euro but feel's it's worth more.
Archie has secured the genuine signatures on the flag of the following football stars and other personalities. Jack Charlton, Alex Ferguson, Paddy Crerand, Sean Fallon, Neil Lennon, Stevie Chalmers, Bobby Lennox, Ronnie Simpson, Willie Mc Stay, Tommy Burns, Charlie Gallagher, Jack Mc Ginn (President S.F.A), Alex Mosson (Lord Provost, Glasgow), Davy May, Joe Mc Bride, John Fallon, John Keane (Director), Brian Quinn (Celtic Chairman), Packie Bonner and Derek Dougan. Locally people such as Daniel O'Donnell, Enya, Margo and Clannad have also added their names.
This week Archie said he wanted it to be attractive with big names. "I'm delighted that all these stars have agreed to help with the appeal and I'm confident that we'll get a high bid now so that we can send Fr. O'Donnell the much needed funds, " he said.
Fr. O'Donnell has strong ties with West Donegal. He has expressed his delight at Archie's campaign, adding that every Euro will help feed someone. "This is really great for an individual like Archie to show his concern for the people in Malawi. It's a lovely gesture and gives me courage," he said.
Speaking of the situation in Malawi, Fr. O'Donnell said that everything will help. "The situation is quite bad at the minute. All the supplies have gone and the poor harvest in the past two years means there's little for anyone. If this year's harvest also fails then the situation will be really bad," he said.
Fr. Owen, who is parish priest in his area of Malwai, has eight churches in the parish and a population of around 15,000. He has already served 19 years in Malawi following an initial three-year period in London following his ordination.
Archie said that he hopes to raise a lot of cash for Fr. Owen. "It's not that easy to get the signatures of such great stars so this is worth something. It would be ideal for a pub or hotel. All the money is going to the starving in Malawi where every cent will help. The highest bidder can have it," he said.
Anyone wishing to bid for the flag can contact Archie Dunlop, Crolly, Co. Donegal or email a bid to oileanbeag@eircom.net

And by the way, where is this tennirefe?
Is that who the Forces of Darkness meet in the Inter Tito Cup next season?
Cheers, Finster

Commentsto evryone in EAST LONDON/ESSEX AREA for a long time we have been starved of any celtic bands in this part of london but on thursday 3rd October BANNA STRAND are playing at the CART AND HORSES just by statford and Maryland station. Tickets are £7 and can be bought at the pub or shanannigans irish shop in seven kings.
come and support the celts in europe before hand and then support one of the best celtic bands around, you never know this may be the start of things to come.
